I have read through and followed several different posts on this topic, including trying ndiswrapper. Nothing seems to get this USB wireless adapter working for me. I need an expert to help walk me through it.

Please verify that you used Windows XP driver files. ndiswrapper requires XP. From man ndiswrapper-1.9:

DESCRIPTION ndiswrapper is two parts: user space tool that is used to install Windows XP drivers and kernel module to load the Windows XP drivers. Both are called ndiswrapper.

Is there also a file bcmwlhigh5.inf in the folder? I suggest you remove 6 and try 5:

sudo ndiswrapper -e bcmwlhigh6
sudo ndiswrapper -i /path/to/folder/bcmwlhigh5.inf

Reboot and check:

dmesg | grep ndis
iwconfig

If this method still produces errors in dmesg and no working wireless, I suggest you try the driver files from here: http://wikidevi.com/files/Drivers/Broadcom/bcm4323x_5.100.68.46_XP.zip and, if still not working, from here: http://wikidevi.com/files/Drivers/Broadcom/bcm4323x_6.30.145.26_XP.zip

In each trial, erase the previously defective driver files:

sudo ndiswrapper -e bcmwlhigh5
sudo rm -rf /etc/ndiswrapper/*

Then install the newer driver files as I described above. Then test:

ndiswrapper -l

That is a lower-case L for 'list'. It should report that the driver is loaded AND that the corresponding device is present. If so, then:

sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
dmesg | grep ndis
iwconfig

If you have lengthy log files to show us, please post them here http://paste.ubuntu.com and give us the link.

  • I had tried to use the Win XP driver (the high5 version), but ndiswrapper said that the hardware was not installed and put a big red "X" over it. The Vista driver is the only one which didn't give me the red "X". I am using the GUI for ndiswrapper though.

  • What does the syslog report? cat /var/log/syslog | grep ndis Since the output may be lengthy, please post it here and give us a link: paste.ubuntu.com Can you confirm you used XP drivers?
