The IDM question is a good one. (I remember the floating button on any flash video on the internet! There are a lot of download managers that pretend to be equivalent to IDM, and they're not. Even in Windows there is no other like IDM, so light and fully featured. Who says there is didn't used it to its full.) I think you'll have to use different download managers to cover the different capabilities of IDM, so I will try to take them one by one according to my use. Maybe you should specify what specific features you would like most. First of all Linux is a very new happy story for an ex-windowser, as far as downloading is concerned. The download speed is much better than in Windows, as far as I can tell (in most cases up to the top limit of your internet speed - to check it, here) . What you have to do is to put THAT to work. I think the best option is to use different download managers inside Firefox. To capture downloads (especially video, etc) I prefer Firefox addon FlashGet to DownThemAll, because it can also add, manage and change the default download manager of Firefox very neatly. So you can add a lot of different such managers. Axel is my favorite. (More about that, here). If you want separate programs, uget is what I would recommend. But I gave up using such programs after discovering the use of Axel, Prozilla and Wget inside Firefox. JDownloader has better speed than in Windows, you can queue-up there a lot of links, some people even use it as their default manager (I do not recommend it under 2 GB of RAM). Considering codecs, Linux handles them differently. What you should do is to have mplayer with SMPlayer and VLC up to date and you don't need to worry. CCleaner and TuneUp utilities are useless here. Linux does not need cleaning up in the sense Windows does (or otherwise dies). Update regularly and if you must have a look at something similar in Linux - look at BleachBit and Ubuntu Tweak. Instead of winrar just go to Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Center and search for types of archives to add that specific capability to your system. Names of archivers: Archive Manager, Xarchiver, Ark, Squeeze, Peazip. |
