What are the best/top games available for ubuntu (free/non-free) but non-commercial. Please help if anyone knows something. And preferably playable offline. (not like urban-terror, although it has a option to play with bots they are not that good).

check out desura.com, ist a platform like steam, but specialized on indie games/mods/free games. They just released a (closed) beta version of their client for linux –  sBlatt Sep 27 '11 at 21:14

As a fan of the original Doom, I have really enjoyed playing Chocolate Doom on Linux. It is very true to the original game, and plays all the WAD files that have been created since. After all these years, it's still a great game. You can learn more about it at http://sourceforge.net/projects/chocolate-doom/.

It's really the only game I play (other than an occasional round of KMahjongg).
