I installed Ubuntu Natty on my machine and sometimes it freezes even when I perform no operation. I have installed restricted drivers, but no luck. My system config

Intel dual core 3.0GHZ
2gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 9500GT
160GB Hard drive

Could you open up the Log File viewer and paste kern.log or kern.log1 to paste.ubuntu.com? – user6658 Sep 11 '11 at 16:21
My guess would be the NVidia card, I've experienced similar issues. WHat drivers are you using? – RobinJ Sep 11 '11 at 16:37
He appears to be using the proprietary Nvidia drivers. The kernel log doesn't seem to have anything surprising in them. Does the system just stop dead and freeze? Does it slowly degrade until death? – user6658 Sep 11 '11 at 16:39

You're using Nvidia's 173 version driver. That is a very old driver version for older cards. You should install 'nvidia-current' through the program "additional drivers". If the program is finicky and won't show it or let you, then enter this in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

Reboot, then see if your stability improves.

Regardless, if your GPU is supported under the current drivers it is advised to use the nvidia-current package instead of those ancient drivers. – user6658 Sep 11 '11 at 19:25
