Does anybody have the same line of MSI notebook or at least close to it? If YES does it work with Ubuntu Natty?

Plan to get this one but I'm hesitant. Always had issues with ATI graphics card not working properly in the past so I stuck with NVIDIA. I like this one because it is just right for my budget and the specs are not too shabby.

  • Intel i5 2410 2nd gen
  • 8GB DDR3
  • ATI Radeon 6470

Actually this one has dual GPU technology. Is it fully supported? I don't expect it to be, but as long as the better graphics card runs fine and Unity doesn't go bananas. Can't bear going back to 10.10. LOL! Somehow the old Gnome look looks antiquated and I'm not planning on using any kind of docker but the Unity Launcher. NVIDIA Optimus isn't supported on Linux anyway, right? So I don't expect the same for ATI. Bumblebee last time I checked still had some issues.

Already read this thread: ATI Catalyst Control Center gives error (Radeon HD 6470M). Has this issue been resolved? It's been like more than 2 months.

Linux in general does not fully support dual gpu's - stuff like bumblebee are work-in-progress/workaround. I would steer clear of dual gpu laptops for a year or so until these issues are sorted correctly. Possible workarounds for dual ATI graphics are to disable the "lesser" gpu via bios or kernel module but at the expense of battery life. – fossfreedom Aug 15 '11 at 14:14
Even kernel switcheroo is just a workaround I presume? Just finished reading a blog about this. He has a script that made switching between GPUs more convenient but that was on Maverick and a differetnt ATI card (HD3200). But whatever. As long as the better card works (on Natty) because what is the use if I'm using Intel integrated graphics? It was very bad as with my previous notebook - HP Compaq Presario. – Marky Aug 15 '11 at 14:25
yes and no - switcheroo is the first attempt I've seen to support dual gpu's in the kernel itself. Keep reading phoronix to see switcheroos' or any future successors' development. Still early days for this technnology. – fossfreedom Aug 15 '11 at 14:31
Ok. Hmmm... .so I'm looking for support of HD 6470 for the Catalyst 11.7 driver. It's not listed, but I'm assuming all 6XX0 chips should be supported by this driver. The closest is HD 6450 here: wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Hardware – Marky Aug 15 '11 at 14:40
Are you still experiencing this issue? – jrg Mar 14 at 12:11
