I was so excited and impatient that's why I couldn't wait for ubuntu 10.10 and upgrade to alpha version 2 days ago. Now, my login screen freezes and I get a message as " gnome power manager have not been installed correctly, contact your administrator". How should I resolve this?

I can't tell you how to get to a working login. But I can tell you that I learned a year ago to immediately run this after install: "sudo apt-get purge gnome-power-manager". I'm pretty sure it's my nVidia card that won't play. –  Smandoli Oct 10 '10 at 14:09

Maybe you should just boot into safe mode and then try to upgrade your system?

sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

I don't know how skilled you are with the console

press alt+ctrl+F1 login in text mode then alt+ctrl+F6 and login screen should be fine now, Ubuntu 10.10 seems quite buggy.
