I doubt this has anything specific to due with the LiveCDs as I will get the same display occasionally when booting from Grub. Has anyone else seen this result before and is there any way I can correct the issue. The laptop in question is a Dell Inspiron 1501.

edit If it means anything to anyone, the stock video card for the 1501 is an ATI R485M.

Unfortunately, yes. I had something similar on my Sony laptop when part of the videocard died (acceleration). For several month I was able to work with no effects before the videocard died in toto. Try 11.04 in the classic no effects mode and see if it still happens. Hope it has a different reason. Best luck.

I don't think the card died as I am still able to boot into 10.04 (my current install) as well as boot into Win7. This phenomena happens on a rare occasion when booting to 10.04. All it needs is a hard reboot and I can usually get back in. However, this is happening consistently with the LiveCDs. I checked the md5sum on both CDs and everything appears to be in order. – plainOldFool Jun 27 '11 at 18:04
