Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04. When I turn on my computer, it lets me put in my password and then shows me only my background. No launcher, icons, or dashboard.

I can open up the finder by right-clicking, but the finder window is not really a "window". It is stuck to the top left corner of the screen with no way to move it around.

I am unable to access terminal.

I found what seemed to be a solution here: Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears

but when I run the command "ccsm," it gets stuck on "Loading icons..." and will not finish.

What is the best way to fix this?
