Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have (very) recently installed Ubuntu, and am having some issues with the brightness. I'm using an HP ProBook - the brightness keys are being registered no problem, and when I go into Brightness & Lock the slider acts normally.

However, this does not change the brightness of the screen at all. No matter how dark I wish to set the screen, it remains at 100%. The research I've done mostly shows people who have issues where the keys aren't working at all, which isn't my issue. The only way I can change the brightness at all is by using the following command in terminal:

xrandr --output LVDS1 --brightness 0.5

Obviously it's inconvenient to do this every time I wish to change the brightness; is there another solution?
