I have tried installing clamav-0.98.4.tar.gz (downloaded from site) by 1) extracting 2) ./configure 3)make 4) make install .. but after 2nd step only it gives this error and doesn't proceed further.

Please add more information to tour question about what you are trying to do, what you have tried etc. For instance, have you tried installing libxml2 and openssl? –  Wilf Jul 25 at 4:08

Mine is Trusty (14.04). And yes, I have installed libxml2 and openssl from Synaptic but to no avail. Still the same error. –  user269877 Jul 25 at 5:17
    
why dont you ude the command sudo apt-get install clamav to install it? it installs 0.98.1 –  Dumindu Mahawela Jul 25 at 8:33
