I've got libdvdcss2 installed but still no joy. Tried VLC, mplayer and the default players and all give me errors. Regionset does not even see the DVD.

VLC are able to ignore the region value with the most drives. However, it must be set to anything:

sudo apt-get install regionset

Place the DVD in your drive and in your case, run

regionset /dev/sr0

regionset does not require sudo but does require a readable disk of any sort in the drive when run –  doug May 9 at 23:27

@doug thank you, fixed –  A.B. May 10 at 6:55

I kinda face this issue too, the thing is I have regionset installed but it doesn't work for me as I have an older DVD-rom and all limits to change the region code has been emptied. So as you know or don't there's a software called AnyDVD HD that is popular on Windows but AnyDVD HD has its alternative on Linux World as it uses decryptor like makemkv which makes it possible to play original discs without changing a region code! I tested it on one of my DVDs bought within U.S. territory and it works like a charm on any video player. To install it run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:heyarje/makemkv-beta
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install makemkv-bin makemkv-oss

Type in Dash makemkv and launch it now navigate to Help --> Register and enter this key:

T-5gyrR7NzjlT9R4WwnwovJ591eN3s_IGkp51GQAJn0FDNQWat4uif8H_sJ6IoZN2Wv2

Now restart the program and insert the DVD and wait until the makemkv loads it. When it's loaded play it with any Video Player.

One thing this is not free software if you like it you can buy it but it's also available using beta keys from this source as it's stated the new keys will be added.

Please make sure that you have installed the following package:

ubuntu-restricted-extras

It is set of many multimedia related packages, including the libdvdnav, which is probably missing in your case. If you have vlc and libdvdcss already, then you have everything required to play any DVD movie.

doesn't he need to install dvdread4 and its counterpart idon'trememberthenameofit? –  sbergeron Jul 22 '14 at 20:43

No, I am not wrong nor forgotten anything. OP has both VLC and libdvdcss already installed - please read the question carefully. The script install-css.sh is not a part of the libdvdread setup. It just downloads and install libdvdcss package since it is not available in Ubuntu repositories. –  user280493 Jul 22 '14 at 21:13

I've got it installed, but dvds still do not play. –  foxy123 Jul 22 '14 at 21:56

Yor DVD is region restricted. You can solve this problem by running:

sudo apt-get install libdvdread4

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
