Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

So I tried installing Ubuntu by following the directions on their site for installing from a USB. I don't have a USB but I'm doing it with an external drive and hoping for the best, but not getting it. I initially followed those steps, and when I booted, it gave me a weird error,I can't remember the details. But I then restarted, deleted the files from the external hard drive and downloaded them over again. Again I restarted, booted from USB, and this time it gave options to try Ubuntu without installing, installing, etc. I choose to install, and now it does nothing but give a blank screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left. Pressing keys does nothing. ... Advice? My usual operating system is Windows 7, operating on a Toshiba Satellite.

@atenz, I'm not sure what Live Installation media is, but I'm going to guess it's what the instructions said to get by going to Pen Drive's Universal USB Installer. I used that to put the file on the external drive. –  Addem Jul 20 '14 at 16:10
