I have a PowerEdge 300 running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

A couple of dist-upgrades ago, my SSH connection died partway through and I can no longer boot cleanly. If I boot in to the current kernel (3.13), I see this error:

Booting system without full network configuration

And then:

Waiting up to 60 seconds more for network configuration

After the purple loading screen goes away, the virtual console (Dell DRAC5) shows the login prompt but no longer accepts keyboard input.

In order to boot, I have to enter GRUB (2), go in to advanced options and manually select "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-32-generic".

The four options in GRUB are:

  • Ubuntu, with Linux 3.13.0-30-generic
  • Ubuntu, with Linux 3.13.0-30-generic (recovery mode)
  • Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-32-generic
  • Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-32-generic (recovery mode)

Booting into 3.13 with recovery mode doesn't work either -- the virtual keyboard stops working after the recovery menu.

Here's what's in /boot:

$ ls -l /boot

And the output of fdisk -l:

Here's update-grub:

Both grub-install /dev/sdb and grub-install /dev/sda work cleanly with no errors.

Just a comment, but I've had nothing but problems using 3.13.0-30 kernel. constant errors when trying to apt-get update/upgrade and sometimes it won't boot at all. –  ElefantPhace Jul 6 at 5:07

What's a reliable recent version? –  Paul Schreiber Jul 7 at 4:19

I've recently had good success with -27 but more recently -29. I can't boot into -30 at all anymore, even with the latest -55 update –  ElefantPhace Jul 7 at 4:22
