My unity is damaged. I need to reinstall it but when I reinstall it nothing changes. Nothing is fixed.

I tried reinstalling it from the software centre. (packages "ubuntu-desktop" and "unity"). I also tried running this: sudo apt-get autoremove --purge ubuntu-desktop then sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop. No good. Nothing changes.

I think this is because when I uninstall it I don't uninstall its dependencies. I don't know.

This source (and others) said to run this to remove unity:

sudo apt-get remove unity unity-2d unity-2d-common unity-2d-panel unity-2d-shell unity-2d-spread unity-asset-pool unity-common unity-lens-applications unity-lens-files unity-lens-music unity-lens-video unity-scope-musicstores unity-scope-video-remote unity-services indicator-messages indicator-status-provider-mc5 appmenu-qt appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 lightdm unity-greeter overlay-scrollbar zeitgeist zeitgeist-core zeitgeist-datahub activity-log-manager-common activity-log-manager-control-center. but they were talking about 12.04 specifically. Will it work for 14.04? (and I will add purge to this command too).

...as for what exactly is damaged, you can look here

Have you tried using Gnome tweak tool or Ubuntu tweak tool? –  muru Jun 29 '14 at 6:34
yes. Tried unity tweak tool, ran unity-tweak-tool --reset-unity but it either hangs at a certain point or keeps "writing" things (errors or sth) over and over. thank you –  Mina Michael Jun 29 '14 at 11:51
...If you meant "ubuntu tweak tool" (not unity tweak tool) I searched for it but couldn't find it. ...would gnome tweak tool help me? isn't it for "GNOME 3" interface? (like they said?) –  Mina Michael Jun 29 '14 at 12:43
Technically Unity is also Gnome 3. Gnome Tweak tool has added options for Gnome shell (which is what you meant), but other settings are common to both. –  muru Jun 29 '14 at 16:16
I see. okay thanks alot. ...looks like I'll reinstall my whole system :( –  Mina Michael Jun 29 '14 at 23:17
