Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

When I SSH into my Ubuntu server, it used to show a message like this:

10 packages can be updated.
6 updates are security updates.

Now it no longer shows this message. I know that apt already knows about the updates, because if I run apt-get upgrade without running apt-get update first, it will show the list of packages to be updated.

How do I get it back?
