I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 on HP Z400 w/s.

After a lock display or suspend, the screen goes black, pressing any key doesn't display any box to enter my password to unlock screen or do a normal shutdown.

The only thing that works is to power off. My work around is to set time out to never and lock off. Still cannot recover from suspend. Therefore cannot use suspend.

Try pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to a terminal. I find this brings back the display, after which I can Ctrl-Alt-F7 to the graphical interface. At least better than switching off. –  Sam Brightman Aug 1 '14 at 22:24
