I'm wondering why the services file is found in different directories throughout the system. Why not just have the file in the $PATH?

Which services file do you mean? /etc/serivces is just there, and nowehre else. –  chaos Jun 20 '14 at 5:48
There are a few copies of config files in other directories as well. If you look in the WireShark directory you will see a sevices file there as well. –  user3619129 Jun 21 '14 at 19:11
Then its a different kind of file, just for wireshark. I don't see the point of your question. What do you gain from a services file in $PATH? in $PATH are only file that are being executed. –  chaos Jun 21 '14 at 22:05
