Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I recently installed Ubuntu and it recently started going to a black screen after booting. I have a dual boot with Windows, so after choosing Ubuntu from the grub menu, the screen goes black and nothing happens. The keyboard and mouse are still operational, because moving or clicking them wake the monitor up when it has gone into hibernation mode (separate monitor, this isn't a laptop). I've tried the nomodeset option, but that doesn't seem to do anything. Has anyone had this problem or is able to help?

Thanks in advance

Try to press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to see if you can login to the console. Then check the content of the Xorg.log file for errors: grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log –  cioby23 May 15 at 18:54

OK, I've opened the log file. How do I check for errors? –  user282041 May 15 at 23:19

If you typed the above command check for lines containing string (EE) and post them here. These are errors of the X display server. –  cioby23 May 16 at 6:19

There aren't any errors, the only "EE" returned was in "Initializing built-in extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER" –  user282041 May 16 at 21:06
