When I plug my HDMI into my TV it runs the same resolution as my laptop. If I try to run at a higher resolution it doesn't fit on the screen.

Is there any way to fix this?

Please update your question and show the output of the command xrandr. Also identify your hardware (videocard) and what driver you are using (open source ?) –  bodhi.zazen May 8 at 23:41
