What is the difference between the two ATI drivers fglrx and fglrx-updates, and what one should I install with a machine with an AMD R7 260X video card? I have found outdated information on the Steam Forums that said there were the same driver, and where can I find up to date information on these two drivers?

fglrx is the original driver available for 14.04, fglrx-updates will be updated as new versions are released/tested/added. Check also here: askubuntu.com/questions/66707/… –  Pavel Apr 21 '14 at 21:39

I have tried both on Ubuntu 14.04, They were the same driver. The "updates" version might be updated regularly, while the the non-"update" version will stay the same through out the release.

This needs clarification. It's not a bad answer, but this question is the first one that comes up when I google "fglrx vs fglrx-updates" and it doesn't convincingly answer the question. –  quant Oct 22 '14 at 6:10

To see the differences between fglrx and fglrx-updates, check this:

For example, on vivid release, git sha is not the same between fglrx and fglrx-updates. But fglrx-update has not been updated yet (while I am writing) to 15.7

That means fglrx-updates is maybe more updated than fglrx, but if you want to stick to the edge, download the latest driver on AMD website

I recently installed ubuntu 14.04 LTS my lap has ati radeon hd 5x series graphic card i installed fglrx thinking it would work because it never worked for me for ubuntu 12.04. This time it failed too and the same old problem (low graphics at boot).

I think they didn't change that fglrx

i repaired my ubuntu 14.04 by uninstalling the fglrx from the recovery mode but some of the options are not working.

So i suggest not to use fglrx for ATI in ubuntu 14.04 if it did not work in your previous ubuntu versions.

about fglrx-updates, after my deal with fglrx i didn't try installing fglrx-updates

I just built this computer last month with a Radeon R7 260X. In Ubuntu 13.10 there were no open source drivers that supported this card and neither did the latest stable proprietary drivers. I had to install the latest proprietary beta drivers to get graphics working in Ubuntu 13.10. With this Ubuntu 14.04 install, the open source drivers support my card fine but I gave fglrx-updates a shot and it seems to be working fine. I'd like to know what the difference is still and also if these drivers are different from the ones on AMD's website. –  Ibuntu Apr 21 '14 at 6:15
From what I was told in the Ubuntu IRC channel, the difference between the drivers you download from AMD's site and the ones you install from Additional Drivers (or whatever it's called) is that the drivers from Additional Drivers are the same as AMD provides on their site, but may not be the latest version available by AMD. The ones you get from the Additional Drivers tool are provided by Canonical for easier access, but could be one or more versions behind. There's no guarantee that using the ones Canonical provides will work 100% of the time. –  MattD Apr 21 '14 at 19:26
That explains why I always see the recommendation to install the driver's from AMD's website instead of using Additional Drivers. Thanks for the info, now I just need to know the difference between fglrx and fglrx-updates. Thanks again. –  Ibuntu Apr 22 '14 at 3:33
