Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

so I've been searching and haven't found the exact answer i was looking for.

Basically I current got a 6 hdd raid 5 array and i'm looking to expand it to 8. but almost all options involve another sata controller either on-board or pci-e

the cheapest option for me would be to use a pci-e sata controller to add 2 more sata ports.

My question is: if the controller dies and drops the 2 hdds from the array can i replace the controller and re-add the disks without the whole array dying.
