Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a desktop computer I want to use as file server. It has "stock" Ubuntu 12.04 installed. Ubuntu thinks the computer has an video monitor hooked-up, which it has not. How do I tell Ubuntu it hasn't?

I did uncomment the line

in /etc/default/grub and ran update-grub.

This doesn't seem to do what I want, I still see Xorg and compiz in the process list after a re-boot.

What did I do wrong?
