why did you remove it? You can install other desktop envoronments and switch between them. You don't have to remove those you don't use... –  Alvar Mar 28 at 9:10

Try pressing CTRL + ALT + F1 once you have booted. You should be redirected to a console interface.

Login as root, and install a new DE (apt-get install gnome-shell for gnome 3. For unity, you can follow these steps)

Then you can reboot, and should be able to login again.

I would install ubuntu-desktop again. sp that you can log in and use your computer. Or you can install whatever desktop you want. I use Ubuntu fallback.

So what happens when you start the computer? Do you get a console only interface? If so, log in with your username and password.

Then type, sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Or whatever desktop you now want.
