I installed VLC player and it still won't play dvds. I'm running 13.10. It acts like its about to play and then it just stops.

Try to reinstall your vlc media player by running sudo apt-get install --reinstall vlc command on terminal. –  Avinash Raj Mar 17 '14 at 4:24
Did you install ubuntu-restricted-extras? sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras –  Wild Man Mar 17 '14 at 4:43
Please open a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T and type vlc and hit enter. Then, from the vlc window that appears, try and play a dvd again. There will be various error messages printed to the terminal. Copy them and edit your question to include them. –  terdon Mar 17 '14 at 5:00

This is a good workaround for playing all types of DVD files in VLC player: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs .

If you want to play your DVD files with style, better quality, and no issues with audio-video sync like you get when using VLC player you can install 'xine' package. Code:

sudo apt-get install xine*

sudo apt-get install xine-ui

sudo apt-get install gxine

After you're done, you can choose xine as default player for dvd files.
