Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a little dual core celeron computer that I will be using as a NAS. I have 8 GB of ram, and I was wondering if there was anyway to leverage that ram to increase file transfer speeds, especially in a multiple user scenario.

ie: when someone wants to watch a show, it starts playing the hdd, but then transfers the whole show to ram, and plays it from there, leaving the hdd to do nothing till needed?

Is this a possibility? does this happen naturally? Am I crazy?

Thanks!
