If one has both Unity and XFCE desktop environments installed in Ubuntu, is it possible (and how) to have them work correctly without one of them taking the place of the other? I want to have Unity's notifications when I log in using the Unity environment and to have XFCE's notifications when I log in using XFCE. Thank you.

You mean, you want this in XFCE and this in unity? –  Amith KK Mar 21 '14 at 4:20
No for XFCE and yes for Unity. I read that light gray notifications were XFCE's ones, but I now understand that XFCE uses a dark background. I read that when Unity notifications change from dark gray to light gray it's because XFCE notification service is used in place of Unity own's one. Here's one of the post I read, including a picture of the light gray notification box: askubuntu.com/questions/105377/… –  Andrew Mar 23 '14 at 19:57
