Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I followed the toturials from http://askubuntu.com/a/286775/251995 to install the AMD Catalyst drivers. Once I finished the "Install Drivers", I directly went to the "Test your Installation" section and the driver seems to work correctly, but both of these tests cannot work after restarting.

And if I followed the "Configuration" section, I would be prompted with an error saying something like low graphical mode when starts up, and need to reset display settings to default, but those two tests still does not work.

I cannot leave a comment in that post though, because I still does not have enough priviliges to do so.

Following is the error message I got when I say those two tests failed:

Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 153 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12

I have found that this card is marginally supported and in my experience the open source driver works better. See wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Hardware , your card is supported on a higher kernel - "Note: Some RadeonHD 7000/8000 cards are actually rebadged variants of older cards and may support open-source acceleration Note2: You will need a linux kernel >= 3.4 for basic open-source modesetting support ". I suggest you try a more recent version of ubuntu. –  bodhi.zazen Feb 25 at 16:58

@bodhi.zazen read that page before, but I don' quite understand its organization, and I am not sure whether that "Radeon 8500" is for me –  Russell Yan Feb 26 at 2:51
