I have a virtual machine Ubuntu 12.04 on VMWare Player.

I tried to enable Unity 3D, to take advantage of Compiz. I have updated VMWare tools and set the option on the player to enable 3D acceleration. For what I read, it seems sort of a pain to get Ubuntu 3D working on a VM and mostly dependent on the hardware.

My host machine is running Windows 7 with an Intel i7 920 CPU and a Radeon 5800 graphics card.

Did anyone find a way to enable 3D acceleration to run Ubuntu 3D on WMware player with similar host hardware?

Are you asking for recommendations for tiling managers? That will be subjective. –  DK Bose Feb 23 '14 at 19:20
Mainly I would like to see if there a solution to have basic tiling windowing capabilities (as in windows start+arrows) on ubuntu 2d OR how to enable ubuntu 3d on a vmplayer, so that I could use compiz. I would rather stay away from gnome xfce or other desktop managers. –  user251507 Feb 23 '14 at 20:06
