I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm having some issues with my install. I've gone through every step that I can find to fix sounds issues including asla reload, alsa reinstall, manually unmuting the asla mixer, updating the sound drivers, and editing the speech-dispatcher file. Nothing seems to work.

I tried to manually installing drivers from the MSI website for my motherboard, but they only have Windows supported versions. I went to the Realtek website to try to find drivers, but the driver I downloaded had instructions for updating the kernel and I think this may be a bit above my head... If anyone has any insight at all I would really appreciate it as my computer is working great and I really like Ubuntu so far - except for the fact that I have no sound. The motherboard is an MSI FM2-A75IA-E53.

I installed Ubuntu and experienced no sound. I've had a few issues with this particular motherboard having no sound through the HDMI cord in the past, but I have an optical cable that has had no issues in Windows. I tested headphones and I can get sound, but I cannot successfully get sound through any other output. I tried a few different walk throughs that I found in forums and couldn't seem to get sound working. This forum post contains the majority of my troubleshooting steps that I mentioned going through in my initial post.

Below are my recognized sound cards.

Sound Cards

In alsamixer I see my soundcards, but my ATI HDMI configureations have four channels and won't let me raise the volume on any. ATI Sound Card

The the HD-Audio Generic won't let me raise the volume on the optical output (S/PDIF) and when I unmute it the channel automatically goes back to mute. Also, on a side note the volume on a few other channels seems to change by a few points on their own back and forth continuously. Generic Sound Card

Lastly, I read that switching the 'IEC958 Playback Switch' value to True in the asound config file could fix the problem, but when I when into the file it appeared to already be set to true (see config file at bottom for details).

How did you connect the speakers to the motherboard? Which sound device did you configure as output device? –  CL. Feb 18 at 7:41

The speakers (TV) is connected by both HDMI and optical (S/PDIF) cables. –  user249460 Feb 19 at 17:09
