Firstly - assuming you logged into the Ubuntu desktop it is possible your graphics hardware does not support Unity you should have seen a screen message come up to state your hardware does not support Unity - if in fact that is the case.

Restart the computer and select Ubuntu Classic at the login screen, this should give you a usable desktop using GNOME then open a terminal and type the following /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p then hit enter.

If you get a response like below you should be able to run Unity;

mark@Inspiron-N5010:~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series
OpenGL version string: 4.1.10665 Compatibility Profile Context

Not software rendered: yes
Not blacklisted: yes
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap: yes
GL npot or rect textures: yes
GL vertex program: yes
GL fragment program: yes
GL vertex buffer object: yes
GL framebuffer object: yes
GL version is 1.4+: yes

Unity supported: yes
mark@Inspiron-N5010:~$

If you get a yes response you may have to enable the restricted drivers for your graphics card.

If you get a no response you can install Unity 2D:

Log out then select Unity2D at the login screen.

Secondly - When you say "cannot find the wifi" do you mean your access point or the wifi does not work on the laptop??
