Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

This is my first time ever doing this.

I have Ubuntu on my USB. I can boot from my USB.

When it asks to install, is it wanting to install on the USB or HDD? Right now it says there's no detected OS on this computer. (I do have Win 8.1)

What's it asking to install on?

Is it possible to install Ubuntu on my USB rather than using the "Try" feature so it doesn't install on my HDD?

Do I select my USB for Boot Loader Installation?

@Alvar That doesn't help me. I have no idea what he's talking about. It doesn't look like it relates to what I want to do. –  Spencer Jan 31 '14 at 19:54
yes it does, askubuntu.com/a/54388/10698 you say you want to install Ubuntu on the USB and run it from it, that's what the answer is about... –  Alvar Jan 31 '14 at 20:09
Maybe this will be of more help? Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported) If not, what exactly do you want to do? –  Seth Jan 31 '14 at 20:17
@Seth I'm wanting to know if I can do a full installation on a USB so I can keep my files from computer to computer. And if so, how? –  Spencer Jan 31 '14 at 20:46
@Spencer there are 3 answers (ways) to reach your goal. You pick one that you would like. –  Braiam Jan 31 '14 at 21:06
