Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've been trying to add an item for Eclipse in Alacarte without success. Several users suggested adding a file named eclipse.desktop to /usr/share/applications, similar to what has been suggested for Ubuntu 12.04, but it doesn't have any effect.

Update: I have finally managed to get Eclipse showing up in the Dash, but only for my user. Apparently .desktop files created in /usr/share/applications are being ignored, why?

Apart from that it seems that Alacarte is largely useless in 13.10.

Did you give the .desktop file executable permission? Also see askubuntu.com/questions/142159/… –  Takkat Jan 25 at 20:05

Why should I? No other file in the /usr/share/applications folder has it. –  Luís de Sousa Jan 26 at 9:23
