Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am currently using ubuntu 11.04. I love the unified feeling you get using the indicator applet with gwibber/evolution/empathy.

The problem is the indicator applet has very erratic notification behavior and hardly notifies you of anything. My mail boxes dont even show up in the indicator applet unless i have evolution opened and sometimes my "new mail" count does not match. I dont even know when i have a new empathy message and i could swear that i play cat and mouse trying to click on a pop up message when i actually get one

What are the notification mechanisms in ubuntu and is there anything i can do to remedy this behavior? Is there a way to edit notification balloon options? (position, size, amount of time it stays) or all this is handled by the application itself
