Just tried to upgrade to 11.04 with Update Manager. Near the end of the "Installing the upgrades" phase, my computer froze completely; the mouse isn't working and the keyboard is flashing.

I don't dare restart in case I break the system completely, but do I have any alternative?

@Stefan - REISUB doesn't work as they keyboard is frozen. Looks like I have to do a hard reboot and reinstall. Damn! – Lolwhites May 5 '11 at 10:51
Did a hard reboot and everything started up OK into 11.04. It looks like everything was installed... – Lolwhites May 5 '11 at 11:25

Have you tried holding ALT and the SysRq (the "Print Screen key") down while typing "reisub"? (Without the quotes, obviously).

  • R: Switch the keyboard from raw mode to XLATE mode
  • E: Send the SIGTERM signal to all processes except init
  • I: Send the SIGKILL signal to all processes except init
  • S: Sync all mounted filesystems
  • U: Remount all mounted filesystems in read-only mode
  • B: Immediately reboot the system, without unmounting partitions or syncing

I had the same problem. I solved it by new installation 11.04 from downloaded CD (I had separated /home dir, so I didn't lose my data).

Maybe would be possible from Grub menu launch previous version of Ubuntu and try upgrade it again.
