Recover data using Photorec onto an External Drive
When I was installing Ubuntu 11.04 from a CD, I told it to use the whole hard disk. That's what I wanted. Somehow, maybe i was tired or temporarily stupid, I didn't notice that the installer was looking at an an external drive I had mindlessly left plugged in. I assumed it was looking at the internal hard disk.
So I click the "ok" button... now the external drive looks like / for a typical linux installation.
With feeble hope, I ask: is there some way to recover the data that was originally there? Maybe some of it somehow escaped being overwritten and some low-level disk tool can get it? The df command reports only 1% of the space is used - so maybe only about 1% of my files are destroyed?
