Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a HP Compaq 6000 Pro running Intel Core 2 Duo with onboard sound using Realtek ALC261. System sound worked fine until the last update on Jan 4. Now it produces the Ubuntu greeting sound, but when I login the system sound does not work. Oddly enough the sounds in my Quicken running in Crossover (wine) are working fine. When I open the sound settings the only device showing is the Digital Audio Output. No Analog available. I have reinstalled PulseAudio, AlsaMixer and Gnome Alsa controller. Have verified nothing muted. Can any one offer a solution to this dilemma? Obviously something was changed at the last update but not sure what happened and how to reverse it.
