The Xubuntu splash screen stays there for at least 5 minutes, often longer. Once the desktop finally comes up, everything runs normally.

When booting without the splash screen, I see the mouse cursor (arrow) on top of the boot messages text screen while waiting for the desktop.

During these minutes, top command shows me a CPU load of about 75% from Xorg and 25% from xfce4-settings

Any idea how to fix this?

Running Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS, installed from Xubuntu 12.04.2 DVD and fully updated
