Every time I log in (in Ubuntu or Ubuntu Classic session environment) only Classic Gnome loads. I installed the graphics driver (nvidia gforce 7200) and tried to run unity --replace but the screen simply freezes.

Running unity in debug mode gave me a pretty extensive file. These errors got my attention (since they show up if I don't run unity in debug mode):

I had a similar error with ubuntu 11.10 and unity 4.24. I struggled for several days reinstalling parts of unity and compiz to no avail.

The solution was to open ccsm (you may need to install it - CompizConfig Settings Manager) and diaable Gnome Compatibility and enable Unity. After completing these steps Unity was back to normal.

I do recall enabling Gnome Compatibility at some point but it hadn't occurred that this could be the problem.
