My usb mouse has stopped working on my fresh install of ubuntu 13.10. It has been working without incident since the install and stopped today after start up. The mouse batteries are fully charged. I have no idea how to find out if my laptop is recognizing it or not.

in terminal, type lsusb to see the usb buses and devices recognised at the moment by your system. That'll help to identify the situation. –  user123492 Nov 29 '13 at 21:34
Are you using Desktop-based Viewport Switching, ie. scroll on Desktop –  doug Nov 29 '13 at 22:43
Doug, sorry, I should have mentioned that I have compiz installed and using emerald as the window decorator. I realized that I had a debian ppa installed. I thought that ubuntu was a debian fork and so the two were compatible. I removed the ppa and now everything is back to normal. I am however, still getting a system error reported box that pops up during startup. I click to cancel it and there seems to be no harm no foul. Thanks for the insight though! –  GlennB Dec 2 '13 at 16:44
