I just installed Ubuntu 12 on my dell laptop with windows, I had to mess around a bit to get the wifi going and now my keyboard is not working.

When I press the keys nothing appears but the keys feel fine. I have checked and number lock is off. this is the top set of number keys and not a number pad.

It starts at the number 1 key, then goes across. 5 key and 6 key work but the rest of the numbers up to - do not. I have read some other posts and tried some things but I have not been able to resolve.

I am guessing this is something with the computer and not the actual keyboard itself since it has never had this problem before.

How to fix this issue ?

Edit: the keyboard layout may be the culprit, does anyone know what layouts are used for dell laptops without num pad?

Welcome to AskUbuntu. If only a few keys are not functioning it is difficult to be an issue related to the OS. Is your keyboard layout settings matching your keyboard? –  Luís de Sousa Nov 25 '13 at 10:57

I checked the layout and it seems like the one i need aside from the fact that it has a num pad and my laptop does not, I checked around in the options and looked at other layouts but have not been able to find one without a num pad? –  user219076 Nov 25 '13 at 23:16
