spent more than a week now, trying to install nvidia and blender on my Ubuntu 12.04 i7 processor with GeeForce 640. following several instruction here and at other forum still I am in the middle of nowhere, did so many fresh install too. I found some forum it says how to install Nvidia driver on Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal starting from fresh installation. I was wondering that it will work for my version of Ubuntu 12.04. It also claims that the linux-headers-generic package isn’t installed by default I must run this command to update.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic

and continue..... My Question is that is it safe to run those command on my machine starting from fresh installation ? for more detail here is the link which i want to follow. http://falkvinge.net/2013/02/15/how-to-install-nvidia-drivers-in-ubuntu-12-10-quantal/#comment-116851

Can you edit in to your question exactly what your problem is? There's no way of knowing whether the commands will be helpful if we don't know what hardware you have and what problem you're having with it. –  Richard Nov 21 '13 at 22:35

** My system ** Intel core i7, nvidia 640 , OS ubuntu 12.04 64bit. ** What i want to achieve ** want to run blender along with CUDA GPU clycle rendering. also want to run some program which requires 32bit lib installed. ** Current Problem ** Blender works fine, i can see the CUDA option but when i try to render using Cycle GPU render it dose not work, no any render image comes out. other program which needs 32bit lib dose not work, it says it requires 32 bit lib, when i try to install that 32 bit lib it says its already there. any help will be highly appreciated. thanks. –  shams Nov 26 '13 at 9:19

Hello Searchfqold, thank you for your response, i found the problem now my GPU Rendering is working with and exception, the problem was Blender package in Repository , some one asked me to install from the main site and now it works, exception is that its not fast enough.
