I am looking to copy files from my ubuntu server to a USB drive, the files are .c, .cpp, .lex, .java and .h.

Why not just copy the files using the copy command? cd /dir/with/files && cp *.c *.cpp *.lex *.java *.h /dir/where_your_usb_is_mounted –  Hennes Oct 31 '13 at 14:37
