Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

i know this question have been asked many times but i really cant get it to work. I just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my Lenovo G580 laptop and i'm trying to manage screen brightness when on battery or ac adapter.

Now i installed laptop-mode-tools and enabled it by appending "LAPTOP_MODE_ENABLED=true" in the "/etc/default/acpi-support"

Next i configured the "/etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/lcd-brightness.conf" configuration file in this format:

CONTROL_BRIGHTNESS=1

#
# Commands to execute to set the brightness on your LCD
#
BATT_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 7"
LM_AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 11"
NOLM_AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 11"
BRIGHTNESS_OUTPUT="/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness"

But it has no effect after rebooting many times, so please does any one has solution for this?

Stupid question - Can't you just use Fn+Up, or Fn+Down adjust the brightness? –  Wilf Oct 29 '13 at 18:30

Can't Canonical fit a tool that would automatically change brightness when on battery or ac? –  Kaspro Oct 30 '13 at 7:18

If using GNOME by the way, there is an extension here. Just found this and remembered. –  Wilf Nov 4 '13 at 17:20
