I don't know what I did other than stupidly typing 'startx' in a ctrl + alt + F2 terminal. Now, when I shutdown, it went to login screen. I thought wierd and tried to log back in and got stuck in and endless loop to the point where I forced a shutdown. A reinstall is NOT an option

Please Help?

Can you provide some more info ? was it your ony X session running ? was the login where you ended up also a ctrl-alt-F2 terminal ? did you try to shutdown from the commandline ? –  thom Oct 29 '13 at 3:44
Like I said, I'm not sure; I ended up in the login screen and trying to put my password sends me back to the same screen. –  xsccmx Oct 29 '13 at 10:08
well, try to issue the command "shutdown -h now" from within a terminal window. This should break the loop. –  thom Oct 30 '13 at 16:25
Thanks for helping, I logged into a guest session and as root reinstalled lightdm and ubuntu-desktop incase there were errors and shutdown from the terminal. –  xsccmx Nov 2 '13 at 23:20
