Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free.

I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 last night and now can't seem to get 13.10 to shutdown or restart. It just hangs at a black screen with a cursor. Any ideas?

Force shutdown and boot into recovery mode on startup (GRUB. hold shift key after BIOS).

still wont shutdown or restart after booting to recovery mode – user204390 Oct 18 '13 at 22:37

Ctrl+Alt+F2 to open up a new tty and run shutdown -r -F -t 1 (The call for a mandatory fsck is recommended but optional).

@user204390 Any error mesage given? – LiveWireBT Oct 22 '13 at 19:02

The definitive solution is here

The problem is in your Kernel, maybe you have two.

I had this problem too.

The solution is you burn 13.10 version and upgrade from DVD.

You will not loose any files, music, pictures, ISO in your VM, etc.
