Since my suggestion were little long, I preferred to post it as answer.. Try it once and reply.. –  Saurav Kumar Oct 16 '13 at 22:08

Open terminal and execute these commands:

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get --purge remove && sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a

Last command would take some time depends upon packages installed in your system. So please be patience. If you don't have any broken/residual packages it would execute silently without any message.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo update-initramfs -u

Then restart your system once.. Reply if you get any error at any particular command with the error message..

@diyism: Is there any difference between sudo apt-get -f install and sudo aptitude install -f? –  Saurav Kumar Mar 2 at 13:18

won't work, do this from live iso: fsck /dev/sdXY –  diyism Mar 3 at 2:06
