I need to run ubuntu through Oracle vm virtual box. Can someone please walk me through it? do I download ubuntu first then open the vm and install it there? or do I need an image? very new to this please help!

If you want to download and install, you can follow steps on this question's answer.

If you just want to download, and avoid installation procedures, just visit

http://virtualboxes.org/images/ubuntu/

and download the required flavor of ubuntu disk.

default username: ubuntu
default password: reverse

Also you don't need to install guest additions, they are preinstalled.
