So I'm trying to get a connection between two Ubuntu computers. This is what happens when I try to connect:

It doesn't give an error it just closes the connection.

Check /var/log/auth.log on 0.0.0.1, check your ~/.profile, ~/.bashrc on 0.0.0.1, make sure your shell is in /etc/shells on the target. Are all of the fields in your /etc/passwd entry correct? Your login is failing at "become the user" time. –  waltinator Sep 24 '13 at 20:08

There is an exit 0 statement in (probably) your .bash_profile. See the second listing in your question, right after the second fortune. –  zwets Sep 24 '13 at 20:32
    
What should I do about the exit 0? Should it be a different number or should it just be commented out? –  troylatroy Sep 25 '13 at 21:48

There is a exit 0 in your .bash_profile file that provokes bash to exit. Remove it as it's not necessary:

Awesome! Removing that exit 0 worked but I couldn't get ssh david@0.0.0.1 sed -i '/exit 0/d' .bashrc .bash_profile .profile .login to work. Here is the output for that: sed: -e expression #1, char 5: unterminated address regex –  troylatroy Nov 26 '13 at 20:04
