I need Silverlight installation on my Ubuntu system, so that i can see some of the Microsfot websites(mainly videos).

Are there any other alternative for Silverlight in Ubuntu? If so what are they and how do I install them?

There is a workaround to use Silverlight by using a custom version of wine, follow the instructions here: askubuntu.com/a/219068/15943 – alfC Dec 13 '12 at 21:48

Moonlight is an open source Silverlight implementation written in Mono. You can download it here: http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/

Moonlight is also available via the Synaptic Package Manager.

In my experience, Starlight cannot be available to linux users. To me, Starlight is Microsof--which is not fond of dealing with linux. One proof, Netflix cannot be watched in linux because Netflix recognizes nothing else but Starlight player.

This is because Moonlight can't fully support Microsoft's DRM (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlight_(runtime)#DRM). But in general, Silverlight content can be played/used with Moonlight. – Eliah Kagan Nov 19 '11 at 21:44
