You can find alot of tutorials online. The most important step is to

  1. Learn the basic commands and how they can be used.

  2. Try to configure new services in Ubuntu and troubleshoot them

  3. Going towards shell scripting (it's good to know how to write shell scripts)

  4. Hang around in Ask Ubuntu ask questions and answer others problem.

Here are some links you will find useful

Using the terminal

Nixcraft

Start with the official Ubuntu book (http://www.ubuntu.com/news/Official_Ubuntu_Book) and then when you ready for something deeper try Ubuntu Unleashed (http://ubuntuunleashed.com/)

From the first link: "Covers the latest version of Ubuntu--Ubuntu 6.06LTS" so I've downvoted your answer. –  user25656 Sep 11 '13 at 11:50

I was informing the user of the book, the series. It is up to the poster to choose the latest book, obviously. It's not my fault that the official Ubuntu book page is outdated. –  isupportopensource Sep 11 '13 at 11:54

the ubuntu uleashed will surely be helpful once i get some experience with the basics...thnx for the link. –  Saber777 Sep 11 '13 at 12:29

On the terminal thing, I can't really find the site I'm looking for, but this might be handy: http://www.cheatography.com/davechild/cheat-sheets/linux-command-line/

If I find the tutorial I'm looking for, I'll edit this.

Best of luck man!
